2004 CFJ National Championship

Report by Chris Snow

North Sails on top at 2004 CFJ Nationals

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach hosted the Club FJ Nationals July 29 to 31st inside the LA harbor breakwater. The regatta was very well attended with a fleet of 73 boats competing for the honors. The regatta is typically a major first step out of the Sabot and into the ranks of college sailing for many of Southern California’s top junior sailors. The regatta is also unique in that competitors can chose and bring their own sails to the event. Many classes, like the C420, control what sails can be used and dictate that all the sails must be the same. The CFJ allows some latitude and many of the top competitors choose to buy their own sails.

This year’s event was a marathon regatta with 10 races sailed over three days. At the end of the weekend two sailors stood above the crowd. Tyler Sinks sailing with Hadley Rockicki and Charlie Buckingham sailing with Marla Menninger finished a strong first and second overall. Both sailors used North Sails built by North Sails One Design in San Diego. Tyler and Charlie are both top Sabot sailors and recent National Champions in that competitive junior class. Both have worked closely with North Sails to develop our current racing shapes.

The North Main and Jib are made out of Dimension/Polyant 165 HTP Square and the spinnaker is made from .5 (.75 oz Actual weight) Superlight spinnaker cloth. All sails are easy to set up and trim. For more information on North CFJ sails please contact our CFJ experts.

North Sails dominate CFJ’s in Newport Beach!

September 2003 - NHYC Fall Gold Cup

The Club FJ is what kids in Southern California graduate to after they have moved out of Sabots. This past weekend was a virtual convention of kids who have moved out of Sabots as 42 teams showed up at Newport Harbor Yacht Club for their Fall Gold Cup event. Well over 200 junior sailors raced in CFJ, Sabots, Bytes and Lasers with the CFJ class being by far the most competitive. Junior sailing is alive and well in Southern California with kids ranging in age from 8 to 18 in attendance at this premier event.

At the end of the regatta on Sunday it was the sibling team of Adam and Melanie Roberts who ended up on top scoring a total of 10 point after throwing out a 5th place to win the regatta. These guys sailed a very consistent series of 3,1,1,2,3 and used the latest North Sails CFJ designs to win the regatta.
