Jay Lutz #1 at the 2006 Midwinters in Key West!

North Sails became involved in the J/80 Class in the beginning and the competition has been chasing us ever since. Using the talents of America's Cup sail designer Dave Hirsch as well as North Sails One Design's own designer, Ched Proctor, we have created the answer to the question :

"What sails do I buy if I want to go fast in my J/80?"

The answer is: North Sails.

NORTH J/80 MAINSAIL
  • Mainsails include: IYRU battens 80, cross cut design, shelf foot, insignia, cunningham, numbers and sail bag. A trim stripe is an optional feature.

155% 600S #1 GENOA

  • The North 155% 3DL Genoa is the perfect sail for any J/80 sailor who may consider doing and non-class racing.

  • It is a must sail for any rating handicapped racer.

  • Includes TT window and 3 draft stripes.

140% 600S #2 GENOA

  • The 140% 3DL #2 Genoa is an intermediate sail for winds up to 15 knots. It fills the gap between the 155% and the 100% Class Jib.

  • To be used on PHRF races.

  • Includes TT window and 3 draft stripes.

"Chris, just thought you'd like to hear that the new sail performed beautifully this weekend at Lake Pleasant. Conditions on Saturday were "windless" and we only got in one race that started at less than 5 knts and died on a shortened course. For the first time in light conditions, we were faster than the Merit 25s with 170s upwind. On Sunday, the breeze was 8-10 and the boat was fully powered up and probably wouldn't like 12 knts. However, we simply walked away from the Merits and a J27. But the J80 just loves this sail at around 5-6 knts in flat water, which we had in the final race Sunday and won by over 14 minutes. Finally, the boat can sail to its handicap against the Merits (which rate 168 vs my 126). Now if I can just eliminate mental errors by the skipper! Anyway, thanks again for a really nice job on the sail and my offer stands to take you out whenever you make a trip over to Phoenix!"
