2006 PC Nationals

North Sails 1,2,3!

The Pacific Class has been a one design racing class in Southern California since it was designed by San Diego’s George Kettenburg in 1929. 84 of these beautiful wooden classics have been built over the years, with the most recent being SDYC Commodore Betty Sherman’s new boat which was completed in the Spring of this year. With a narrow waterline, long overhangs and lots of sail area these boats are a joy to sail in the light to moderate winds of Southern California.

These boats have a special place in the history of San Diego Yacht Club, since most of the boats were built just around the corner at George Kettenburg’s boat yard. The boats also have a special spot physically at the club where about 15 of them are lined up in the water on “PC Row” a special section of the docks at SDYC.

SDYC was host to the 2006 edition of the PC Nationals last weekend (September 16-17) with 12 boats making it to the line. Crews came from (actually back home to) San Diego from as far away as Florida for this reunion weekend. Many crews had spent the previous few days getting tuning up and practicing. Heavy winds on Saturday and lighter winds on Sunday made for a full test for crews and skippers.

At the end of the event sailors using North Sails were 1,2,3 overall. Andy La Dow, with North Sail’s own Steve Pickel on the bow walked away with the event with scores of 1,1,1,2,1. He was followed by Bennett Greewald in second and many time National Champion, Jack Sutphen in third. North Sails is proud these sailors chose North Sails and proud to be involved with such a historically significant class!
