2002 Ash Bown Regatta

Report by Bill Hardesty

13 boats competed in the 2002 Ash Bown Star Regatta held October 26-27 at the San Diego Yacht Club. Light shifty winds and kelp plagued the regatta but in the end there was just enough wind and daylight to get 5 full races completed.

After a morning wind postponement the San Diego Yacht Club Race Committee got in two races before the wind fully died. In the first race the breeze was light but steady. Will and I found Star #7737 using Ross McDonalds hand me down North Sails moving well in these conditions. Rodrigo Meriles of North Sails One Design set the boat up as per the tuning guide, gave us a couple of pointers, and whished us luck. We won the first race but were followed closely by Jeremy Davidson and Jessica Costa from Alamitos Bay Yacht Club with third place going to locals Gregg Morton and Gary Mitchell.

The breeze built just a bit for the second race on Saturday to a point where we almost had the crews over the side. It was locals Mike Dorgan and Eric Weintraub out in front. The favored right side of the course was the place to be. Just when we thought the breeze had settled it had died again and the lead boats were sitting in a big hole. My crew Will Stout saw a bit of breeze on the right side so we split from the leaders, Dorgan/Weintraub, and came back across in the lead. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

After a great Saturday night Oktoberfest party at Jay Butler's we all had an extra hours sleep due to the time change but the wind was still struggling. Once the storm cells moved out the area the breeze started to fill in. The first race Sunday started with Will and I in the lead but Dorgan and Weintraub passed in a short tacking dual as the breeze became fluky. Race 4 in the series was easily won by Argyle Campbell with Kevin Bowles who led from the start to finish, nice job Argyle and Kevin. In the final race Will and I had a great boat end start that took us all the way around the course. Dorgan and Weintraub fought hard and nearly passed us at the finish but we held on tight to squeak out the last race of the series victory.

Thank you goes out to the San Diego Yacht Club, The Butler Family, and everyone behind the scene who helped put the event together. I personally would like to thank North Sails for the hand me down sails and Eric Doyle and Rodrigo Meireles for the use of Star #7737.

I hope to see you at the Kriss Kringle in December.

2002 Michlobe Cup

Report by John MacCausland

MICHLOBE CUP
October 12-13, 2002
West River, MD.

With tropical storm Kyle passing by the Mid-Atlantic States on Saturday it brought us dark and stormy clouds with breeze from the North-Northeast at 12 to 13 knots. Very challenging conditions with many shifts, rough water and a strong outgoing tide. Race one saw John MacCausland and John Avis lead at the first mark with a good lead. The rest of the fleet was tightly packed at this rounding. On the second beat Tom Price and Will Wagner made a strong push at the lead boat, falling just short at the weather mark. MacCausland and Avis opened up on the run to finish with a comfortable lead. Tom Price crossed second with Barbara Vosbury and Trapper Lippincott third.

Race two was very similar to the first race but with more outgoing current the left side of the beat became more favored. At the first mark Tom Price and Will Wagner were followed closely by John Vanderhoff and Scott Karr. On the run the left paid having a more favorable current. Barbara Vosbery and Trapper Lippincott sailed a great run rounding the leeward mark overlapped with Tom Price for the lead. Both boats went right on the last beat which let John Vanderhoff and John MacCausland free to go to the left. Both Johns made a large gain on the lead boats. About half way up the leg they passed the lead boats. During the second half of the leg John and John opened up on the fleet. By the weather mark John MacCausland had a nice lead on John Vanderhoff who in turn had a good lead on the rest of the fleet. On the run to the finish things stayed pretty much the same. At the line it was John MacCausland then John Vanderhoff with Tom Price in third.

The forecast for Sunday was promising but never materialized. No wind, no racing and the standings stayed as they were on Saturday. Jack Lynch and his race committee did a great job on Saturday. Too bad they did not get a chance on Sunday.

For North this was the end of a very good season on the east coast and particularly the Chesapeake Bay. On the Bay this season North Sails won all but two of the major weekend events. Well next year we will have to go for a perfect record.

1st John MacCausland & John Avis 1-1 = 2 pts. North

2nd Tom Price & Will Wagnor 2-3 = 5 pts

3rd John Vanderhoff & Scott Karr 4-2 = 6pts.

2002 Oxford Fall Wind-up Regatta

Report by John MacCausland

2002 OXFORD FALL WIND-UP
September 28-29
OXFORD, MD.
19 BOATS

Fall weather at its best! Saturday we had very strong winds 25 to 35 MPH sustained. The committee postponed until 3:15 pm. By this time the breeze started to soften up. The committee set up a three lap triangle course to
starboard in the small bay right in front of the club. At the start three boats were over early – Burt Collins, Trapper Lippincott and John MacCausland. The rest of the fleet was off to the races. At the first mark Rob Maine and Kevin McNeil led with Doug and Bob Schofield in second. These two boats had a good lead on the rest of the fleet. Round and round we went for three laps. Rob Maine and Kevin Murphy lead at every mark to win with
Doug and Bob Schofield second. John MacCausland and Burt Collins came a long way back to end up third and fifth respectfully. Back on shore we all enjoyed a great meal prepared by the staff at the Tred Avon Yacht Club. John Sherwood gave a wonderful presentation about the history of the Fall Wind-up. This was the 51st. running of the wind-up.

Sunday dawned beautiful with light northeast wind. By the time we all arrived at the race course the wind started to get lighter, and by the time we were half way up the first boat the wind was very light and shifty. The
right seemed to be paying. Pickall and Branford lead coming from the right. Jim and Matt Freeman came from the left to round second. The run was pretty uneventful. The big mover on this leg was Rob Maine and Kevin Murphy coming from 6 or 7th. to round second. The second weather leg was very difficult. By now the breeze was really dying. The first group of boats went right and a few boats went left. About half way up the leg the breeze all but quit. Once the breeze started to fill back in it came from the left leaving the leaders on the right hanging. John MacCausland and Burt Collins gained the most from the left rounding first and second at the mark. The run to the finish turned into a reach which kept passing to a minimum.

At the finish it was MacCausland, Collins and Lippincott for the top three. We all had a great weekend, thanks again to Richard Lippincott and the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

1. MacCausland & Baltins 3-1 = 4 pts North
2. Maine & Murphy 1-5 = 6 pts
3. Collins & Avellon 5-2 = 7 pts

2002 Nutmeg Regatta

Report by John MacCausland

2002 NUTMEG REGATTA
SEPTEMBER 21-22
MILFORD, CT.
25 BOATS

Maybe it is me but I thought it was supposed to be cool this time of the year. Not this year, it was more like summer time than fall. We spent the first two and one half hours on the water waiting for the wind. It was
eighty to eighty five degrees. So many crews took the opportunity to take one last dip in Long Island Sound before the arrival of colder weather.

By about 1:30 we started to see some wind coming from the southeast. The committee sprang to action setting the course and getting ready to start the first race. The wind was still light when we started the race. By the time the first boats reached the first mark there was very little wind and an adverse current. The boats that got around the mark opened up nicely on the boats that were still going to weather. The first weather leg almost took one hour and it was only 1.25 miles long. By the time we reached the leeward mark the committee chose to shorten the race and finish us at the leeward mark. Dave and Geoff Chittick won the race with Carol Gracco and Peter Costa second, John MacCausland and Sean Delaney hung on for third.

The breeze finally filled in and we were able to start the race in 8 to 10 MPH. It felt great to be able to hike for a whole race. John MacCausland led at each mark to win the race. John Lombard and Kip Gardner were second
at the first mark with Ben Cesare and Mike Whitford third. On the first run Ben passed John Lombard and that is the way the race finished.

Sunday was one more day of summer, warm with light breeze. By the time we started the wind was very light. At the first mark John Bainton and Will Christensen led with Ben Cesare close on their heels. On the first run Ben was able to pass John and open up a huge lead by the leeward mark. Ben was over twenty minutes ahead. On the next leg the wind was light and right. Ben protected the right side of the course which at the time was the right thing to do. John Lombard rounded the leeward mark in tenth place. He and Kip worked towards the left. By the time we neared the second weather mark the committee chose to shorten the course. The three legs that we sailed had taken the leaders nearly three hours. Near the finish the wind on the right had all but died. Here came John Lombard from the left in the best breeze on the course. John & Kip came within a boat length of winning the race. Remember John had to be twenty five minutes behind Ben at the last mark. John MacCausland and Sean Delaney hung on for third. With this finish MacCausland and Delaney sealed the overall victory. Thanks again to the Mid-Connecticut Star Fleet and Milford Yacht Club for putting on another great event. Remember Milford Yacht Club puts on two events each year, we all appreciate what they do for Star sailing in the Northeast, thanks.

1. John MacCausland & Sean Delaney 3-1-3 = 7pts North
2. John Lombard & Kip Gardner 4-3-2 = 9pts
3. Gary MacDonald & Serge Leonidov 8-6-5 = 19pts

2002 Lake George Open Regatta

Report by John MacCausland

September 14 - 15, 2002

After a long summer with not much breeze we were blessed with two days of wind. Saturday we raced two races in a nice southwesterly of 10 to 20 knots. There were quite a few shifts to make the racing very challenging. By the end of the day, having sailed two races, John MacCausland and John Wulff were in the lead, having won both races. The next four boats were only separated by one point. Very close racing.

Saturday night the Northern Lake George Star Fleet put on a great steak cookout. There was more food than anybody could eat. Thanks to all that helped to put this event on.

Sunday morning, to all our surprise, it was not raining. The forecast was for rain, heavy at times. It did not look good for sailing on Saturday night. But as we all know the weather forecast never seems to be right. By 10 am we were all on the water for the start. Again we had a good southwesterly breeze, about 10-15 knots with a few shifts thrown in for good measure.

MacCausland and Wulff lead at each mark to seal the overall victory. But the real race was for second. Dave Cook, Peter Hall, Rick Dhein and Hank Rowan all had their chance to finish second during the last race. But in the end Rick Dhein and Bruce Hatfield came out on top. Peter Hall, in his second Star regatta was third.

Lake George is a beautiful place to be this time of year and we hope the Star Fleet will carry on the tradition of having us to their Yacht Club each fall.

By the way the rain held off until we all had our boats packed and ready for the trip home. So much for the weather forecast.

1. John MacCausland & John Wulff 1-1-1 = 3 points
2. Rick Dhein & Bruce Hatfield 7-2-2 = 11 points
3. Peter Hall & Dominic Trepanier 5-3-3 = 11 points
4. Dave Cook & Michael Wood 4-4-5 = 14 points
5. Peter Marshall & John Barth 3-8-5 = 16 points

2002 Sunapee Open

By Richard Burgess
August 3 & 4, 2002

North 1,3,4,6,7!!!

Well, first the Lake Sunapee Star Fleet hosted a fantastic North American Championship. Then, right on its tail, they host another fabulous regatta-their annual Lake Sunapee Open. The off-water activities and fabulous food of Lake Sunapee Yacht Club have spoiled us rotten. Friday night we were treated to delicious seafood buffet and on Saturday night we enjoyed the renowned steak dinner, cooked by the local star sailors.

Hazy, hot, humid, and no wind were the weather conditions on Saturday, so the racing was canceled. All was not lost as John Mac and myself hiked up a local mountain to get a little exercise and then enjoyed the hospitably of our host, Sam Rowse, and we went swimming. Many of the other sailors stayed at the club and relaxed in the bright sun and clear, clean water of beautiful Lake Sunapee.

On Sunday morning the lake looked as still and smooth as a mirror and some were dubious that we would race at all. But then a nice little breeze started coming from the south and the race committee sent us out. The first race started in a very light southerly with crews to leeward. As we sailed up the first leg the breeze continued to build and we started hiking. At the weather mark, Peter Hall of the Montreal, Canadian fleet, was in the lead, we were second, and John Chiarella was third. We were fortunate to get a little shift on the second beat and rounded in front of Peter, and then we held our position to the finish line.

The second race started in puffy 8 to 12 knots of southerly wind and again Peter Hall called the first beat perfectly and lead at the weather mark, with Andy Ivey second, and John Mac and me in third. As we got to the leeward mark Andy did a really nice job getting inside of Peter and rounding first, with Hall second, and us third. The order stayed the same to the weather mark, but on the run "Lil" Mac worked his downwind magic and managed to get by Hall. The final upwind to the finish was a little nerve racking as the breeze was shifty, Ivey was covering us, and we were trying to stay ahead of Hall. When we got to the finish line it was Ivey, MacCausland, Hall.

This was Peter Hall's first time in a star and he is going to make a nice addition to the 12th district. Peter is a past World Champion in both the Soling and Lighting Class's.
In fact, we are delighted to welcome the entire Montreal, Canadian fleet to the 12th District.

We also want to thank the race committee for a well-done job. We all know that without your work, there would be no racing. Thanks again to the Lake Sunapee Star Sailors, and to the wonderful crew at the Sunapee Yacht club.

San Diego Team Wins 2002 Star Lipton Cup

Report courtesy Kent Pierce

Santa Barbara, California. Skipper Rick Merriman and crew Rodrigo Meireles bested an international fleet of 16 teams to capture this year's Star Lipton Trophy. The two-day regatta was held over the weekend of July 27th & 28th less than one-mile South of the Santa Barbara harbor entrance.

The ornate Cup was deeded to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club by British tea tycoon Sir Thomas Lipton and first contested in 1923. It is adorned with the names of some of the greatest names in sailing including Lowell North, Tom Blackaller, Dennis Conner, Vince Brun, Eric Doyle & Mark Reynolds.

This is the second time Meireles will have his name engraved on the elaborate trophy. Meireles won the event in 2000 crewing for Eric Doyle, former Star boat world champion currently training in New Zealand for the America's Cup with Team Oracle BMW. Qualifiying races for the America's Cup begin this October in Auckland, New Zealand. Meireles is a professional sailmaker with the North Sails One Design loft in San Diego.

Meireles' skipper this time was Rick Merriman, a pilot for Federal Express and verteran of Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes America's Cup campaign. Rick is also an Etchells 22 world champion crew.

Merriman and Meireles found the lighter breezes to their liking and won the regatta in dominant fashion posting scores of 1-2-1-1-1. The five races were sailed over a two-day period with winds in the range of 5-7 knots both days, building slightly for the last race on Sunday.

The level of competition for this year's event was unprecedented as teams from the United States, Australia, Canada, Sweden and England looked to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Lipton Cup as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Star World Championships in Marina del Rey. 114 entries, including 11 past world champions and five of the last six gold medallists are expected to vie for what is widely regarded as the most prestigious class championship in sailing.

Second place was captured by Ian Walker and Nick Williams of Australia. Walker appears to adjusting back to small boats nicely after recently completing the Volvo 'Round the World Race with Team News Corp.

Reigning Star World Champion, three time Finn world champion, Olympic bronze medalist in the Finn class and Volvo 'Round the World veteran from Team SEB, Frederik Loof of Sweden finished the regatta in third place with crew Anders Ekstrom.

Other participants included Finn class gold medallist Iain Percy of Great Britain with crew Steve Mitchell; and, renowned Australian yacht designer and 1987 America's Cup helmsman Iain Murray with crew Andrew Palfrey.

2002 District 2 Highlights - North Wins 5 out of 6 2002 events!

Report by John MacCausland

2002 LIPPINCOTT MEMORIAL REGATTA
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND
NORTH SAILS 1ST & 3RD

The conditions this weekend varied greatly. Saturday we had light wind and flat seas. Sunday was a shifty north westerly wind of 18 to 25 knots. Going into Sunday's gear buster three boats were within 2 points with one race to go. John MacCausland and Bob Schofield lead at every mark with Tom Price and Will Wagner second at each mark. MacCausland survived a spectacular wipe out on the last run to win the race and the series in a tie breaker with Tom Price. Aron Serinis finished 5th in the final race and 3rd in the series. Using LC-1 Main and R-2 Jib, we were able to go through the large range of conditions - 5 to 8 mph on Saturday to 18 to 25 mph on Sunday. Truly an all around set of sails.

RESULTS

John MacCausland & Bob Schofield 2 - 3 - 1 6 Pts.
Tom Price & Will Wagner 3 - 1 - 2 6 Pts
Aron Serinis & Chris Brown 4 - 2 - 5 11 Pts.

2002 2ND DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
MILES RIVER, MARYLAND

With 23 boats attending this year's Districts, we had our largest turnout in many years. This year's series was mainly a light air affair. Saturday we went out in the bay to race. Race one got off without a hitch. We sailed for over 1 hour and did not reach the first weather mark. The committee abandoned the race. Race one, the second version, was another light air contest. The left side paid big on the first beat. Aaron Serinis and Chris Brown lead at every mark to win the race with John LeCourt and Chris Hardin second.

Race 2 started with the left paying again. Aaron and Chris were out in the lead with many close in pursuit. As the race went on what little wind there was finally died to nothing at the last mark. With the wind shutting off the next breeze came 180 degrees different then it was, still very light. By the finish there was almost no wind. With all the shifting of the wind, the fleet also changed positions as much. John MacCausland and Sean Delaney came through with the win and Aaron Serinis took it on the chin the hardest and finished 20th. A very long day.
Sunday dawned much like Saturday, very little wind with high humidity and temperatures. We towed out to the bay but there was no wind and not much prospect of any. The committee towed us back in to the river where there was a much better chance of wind inside. As the day went on the wind slowly increased to 7 to 9 knots. With this wind the committee was able to get three races in.

John MacCausland and Sean Delaney sailed very solid to finish out with a 2 - 1 - 1 to win the District Championship.

Again the LC-1 Main and R-2 Jib seemed to be a very good combination for the light air and flat water that we encountered.

RESULTS
1. John MacCausland & Sean Delaney (9)-1-2-1-1 5 Pts.
2. John Vanderhoff & Rowan Perkins (13)-5-3-7-2 17 Pts.
3. Barbara Vosbury & Trapper Lippincott 6-4-(7)-5-3 18 Pts.
4. John LeCourt & Chris Hardin 2-2-5-12-(16) 21 Pts.
5. Aaron Serinis & Chris Brown 1-(OCS)-4-2-15 22 Pts.

2002 MILLER SERIES
GIBSON ISLAND, MARYLAND

A very good weekend for the North Team. We raced out in the Chesapeake Bay north of the Bay Bridge. As the day went on the breeze built to 5 - 9 mph in the last race. After starting about one minute late, Trapper Lippincott and Barbara Vosbury came back to win the race in convincing fashion.

Race 2 & 3 were sailed in just a little more wind than race one. In general the fleet stayed very close around the race course in both races. John Vanderhoff and Rowan Perkins won the second race with John MacCausland and Sean Delaney winning the third race.

After three races on Saturday there were 3 boats within 2 points. Sunday dawned rainy with a good breeze from the east. The committee chose to sail in the river. Race one on Sunday again had the fleet very close together for the majority of the race. As the race went on the breeze slowly went down. MacCausland and Delaney held on for a hard fought win.

Race 2 on Sunday started with about 5 to 8 mph of wind. As time went on the breeze got lighter and lighter until it shut down. The committee abandoned the race at the last mark with MacCausland and Delaney in the lead.

MacCausland and Delaney came out on top with Trapper Lippincott and Barbara Vosbury second and Tom Price and Will Wagner third.

Weekend after weekend the combination of the LC-1 Main and R-2 Jib seem to be hard to beat.

RESULTS

1. MacCausland & Delaney 5-2-1-1 9 Pts.
2. Lippincott & Vosbury 1-3-2-7 13 Pts.
3. Price & Wagner 4-6-5-3 18 Pts.

Star Sail Test
Marina Del rey June 24-29, 2002

North Sails San Diego and North Sails UK working together to improve the Star sails for the 2002 Worlds.

Report by Rodrigo Meireles

Following our schedule, we had our second training session in preparation for the 2002 Star Worlds, Marina Del Rey from June 24th to the 29th. The same teams were present: John MacCausland, Rick Merriman, Rick Peters, Bill Bennett and the British Team Ian Percy, Steve Mitchell and Paul Hobson (North Sails UK).

Conditions: The weather was typical Del Rey conditions: 7-12 knots and very choppy. These are the conditions that we expect for the Worlds in August.

Sail Improvements: Based on the conclusions of the first training camp in San Diego, both North lofts (San Diego and UK) worked together to improve the designs. New sets of sails were taken to Marina del Rey, and after 6 days of extensive tests and analysis we are confident that our sails are the fastest and the best choice for the Star Worlds.

North Max Roach Mainsail seen from the top - This sail is very powerful!

Mainsails

Max Roach: Our max size mainsail is very powerful. The draft was moved back to the center of the sail, the entry is finer and the head a bit fuller. This makes the sail optimized for winds from 0-16 knots and choppy conditions. This mainsail will probably be used most of the time at the Worlds in Marina del Rey. We now offer carbon battens (40% lighter than the standard battens) as an option.

LC-1: The new LC-1 mainsail is designed with the lighter crew in mind. This sail is designed to de-power earlier than our Max-Roach main, making it much more forgiving for lighter crews. It is also used as a heavier option (16+ knots). Since the Star rules allow you to measure two mainsails for the Worlds, the LC-1 is a good heavy air option. We also offer have carbon battens as an option.

Jibs

J-7: The J-7 is a light air (0 to 10 knots) and choppy conditions jib. With a rounder entry and very well developed design, this sail is easy to steer to and to set up. It flies especially well in choppy conditions where the boat is being pushed around by the waves. This is the jib that we recommend for the Worlds in Marina del Rey. Carbon clew blocks are now standard on our Jibs.

R-2: The R-2 is our All-Purpose jib. It is a very forgiving sail that can be used with any breeze , except light air and choppy conditions. It has enough power to be used in light air and flat water and is forgiving enough for heavy air (25+ knots). Since you are allowed to measure two jibs for the Worlds in Marina del Rey this sail would be a good choice when racing on 12+knots of breeze.

If you are interested to know more about our Star program, feel free to contact the Star Experts!

Good Sailing!

Star Clinic
May 18-19 2002
Central Long Island Sound Fleet - Westport CT

Report courtesy Nelson Stephenson

There is absolutely nothing like a cold, wet day with a 20 knot northwesterly to make an indoor Star Clinic seem like a great idea. As John MacCausland, arrived at Cedar Point Yacht Club for the 2002 Star Tuning Clinic we settled into the Cedar Point Yacht Club house for a morning of discussion about how to set up a Star. Little Mac fielded questions from the Fleet on topics ranging from set up to boat speed and spent time individually with each owner discussing their boat. He also provided the Fleet with his 2002 Tuning Tip, a booklet of practical tips on Star set-up and tuning. Following lunch and a break in the rain, the Fleet adjourned to the parking lot and John went over each boat in the Fleet, making sure that set up and tuning was "in the ballpark" and answering more questions from all Skipper's and Crew.

Saturday night the CLIS Star Fleet (and David Bolles) had a Fleet dinner hosted by Nelson and Mary Stephenson at their home in Southport, CT. The dinner gave the Fleet the opportunity to get to know John better, hear more about his US Sailing Olympic Campaign and the Winter Circuit in Florida and to just get back together again after a long winter.

Sunday brought much better weather and a "blue sky" day with a light morning breeze which built to a wonderful 12 knot breeze by the middle of the day producing a glorious sail in the middle of Long Island Sound. 7 Star boats enjoyed a great tune-up sail with John MacCausland following each boat in a "Coach" boat providing feedback and double-checking the set up on each boat. Guy Gurney served as Fleet photographer and took pictures of each boat to confirm rig set up. Following the picture session John MacCausland boarded each boat and again reconfirmed set-up and "on-the-water" feel of each boat.

At the end of the day, the CLIS Fleet and the 4 members of the MID Fleet that joined in as well were impressed with John's overall Star knowledge and patience. Certainly, North Sails has a great Star representative in "Little Mac" who contributes a great deal to the development of the Class.

The CLIS Star Fleet appreciates the effort that John puts forth and recommends that all local Star Fleets plan to begin their season with an on-the-water session with John MacCausland of North Sails.

"What a great way to start the season.. Great discussion with a knowledgeable, World class sailor who makes a difference in your
early season boat speed."

Nelson Stephenson

2002 South American Championships

Report by Rodrigo Meireles

January 7, 2002 - I have just finished racing the Star South American Championship held by the Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club (Brazil). They did a great job, we had 6 races with winds from 8 to 18 knots and big swells. It was a good opportunity to see old friends and sail again in Rio (what a weather...).

There were 28 boats with 4 gold medallist, 3 World champions and few others great sailors. Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira won the regatta with 7 points, I sailed with an old friend Alan Adler finishing in second with 14 points,we had a slow beginning , but by the end of the regatta we were going as fast or faster than Torben. We were using a MaxRoach Mainsail and a J-7 jib.

Another interesting thing about this regatta was the prizes - MONEY and we were fortunate to get a R$ 3000,00 check (US$ 1300,00), see pictures below.

Any questions about the Star sails or the South American Championship, please contact Rodrigo Meireles.

Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira
South American Champions

Rodrigo Meireles and Alan Adler - Second Place

Bruno Prada, race commitee Pedro Paulo Petersen and Robert Sheidt - Third Place

2001 Calvin Paige Regatta - North 1st!

Report by Rodrigo Meireles

October 22, 2001 - This past weekend we sailed the Calvin Page Star Regatta in San Francisco. As expected it was cold and windy. The turnout was pretty good with 20 boats racing in the city front. Most of the the good West Coast Star sailor were there. I crewed for Eric Doyle and we were fortunate to win the regatta with 9 points over the second place. We used a new Star main that we are developing and the R2 jib (Heavy air jib). The main did very well, speed was not a problem.

Top 5:
1- Eric Doyle / Rodrigo Meireles North Sails
2- Austin Sperry / Andrew Higgs
3- Benny Mitchell / Rick Peters North Sails
4- George Szabo / Andy Vare
5- Howie Shiebler / Darryl Hyatt

If you need any more info about the Calvin Page or Star sails fell free to contact myself or Vince Brun at the San Diego loft.

2001 Bedford Pitcher - North 1st!

Report by John MacCausland

This years Bedford Pitcher was scheduled for September 15-16 the weekend after the World Trade Center disaster. The Cedar Point YC and the star fleet chose not to run the event and postpone it till October 6-7.

The weather during the week leading up to the event was wonderful warm southerly breezes and sunny skies. On Friday night a strong cold front passed over the area and in its wake the temperature dropped 25 degrees and the wind shifted from the Southwest to the Northwest and picked up to 25 to 35 knots.

Saturday was windy and very cold so by 1 PM the race committee decided to cancel the racing for the day and try for two races early Sunday moring. Later that afternoon William Swigger and Carroll Bee went for a sail, they came back with the opinion that the committee had made the right decision. We also moved the dinner from the evening to a late lunch which was very nice. Tim Duval a fleet member did all the cooking and did a spectular job.

Sunday donned windy and very cold but the forecast was for raceable conditions early and then becoming much windier. The plan was to go out and try to get the races in before the big wind came. Out of the 14 boats that had registered 8 chose to go out for the racing. Once we arrived on the course it was not that windy. The race got off without a hitch. At the first mark Pete Cusick had a little problem and his mast came down. Pete was in good shape when this happened second place. On the reaches we did not even plane every thing was going just fine with the wind at this point. On the way to the course and during the race we lost four of the boats that came out to the race each had a different problem one boat went a ground in a very large puff another broke his mast, the third had batten problems and the last boat was late for the start.
We finished at the second weather mark with John MacCausland and Sean Delaney first, Bill Watson and David Chard second, Guy Gurney And Tim Duval third.

The committee chose to send us in after the finish. This was a good call by the time we hit the dock the wind was in the 25 to 35 knot range with some bigger puffs. After we put our boats away the fleet had a large pot of hot soup that was great after being cold and wet earlier in the day. Thanks to all that were involved hopefully next year the weather will cooperate.

Overall Results
1 John MacCausland and Sean Delaney North Sails
2 Bill Watson and David Chard North Sails
3 Guy Gurney and Tim Duval
4 Will Swigart and Carroll Beek North Sails

North 1st at the 2001 Nutmeg Regatta!

Report by John MacCausland

The Nutmeg Regatta is the fall event that the Milford Yacht club runs each year. Along with the Nutmeg this year Milford Y. C. also hosted the Arms White and the Star North Americans. Running any one of these events would be enough for one yacht club to handle. But Mifford Y. C. handled this with ease. There is many people behind the scenes that make these events happen. Jack Button is one of these, he does so much to make these events run smoothly and does not ask for any thing back.

It was very nice to see Jack Button win the Nutmeg Regatta this year. He and Chris Batchelor sail very consistently in very difficult conditions scoring three third place finishes for the overall win.
A very nice way to end a season of hard work. Thank you Jack for all you do and a job well done. See everybody next June for the Arms White Regatta.

Jack was powered by North Sails to win the regatta. He also won the Atlantic Coast Masters this Summer with North Sails.

Congratulations Jack!

North 1,2 at the Lake George Open Regatta!

Report by John MacCausland

LAKE GEORGE OPEN
SEPTEMBER - 15/16, 2001

After a trying week for our country and many events being canceled, Northern Lake George Star Fleet chose to go ahead with their regatta and let the sailors decide to participate or not.
Fifteen boats decided to attend. The weather for the weekend looked great, plenty of sun and cool temperatures. But the forecast left one thing out - wind.
Saturday's race was very light with Andy Ivy and Rick Dhine pulling out to a large lead, only to see their lead disappear and the time limit run out. So no race on Saturday. Hopefully we will have good wind tomorrow.

Sunday dawned sunny and nice - 12 to 15 knots southerly.
Race one got off without a hitch. Kirk Reynolds lead at the first mark with John MacCausland second and Rick Burgess third. At the bottom of the first run the breeze shut down and went to the west, which really stirred the pot. After the dust settled Andy Ivy came out on top with Kirk Reynolds second and Rick Burgess third.
Race two the breeze came back from the south and we had a very nice race. Andy Ivy lead wire to wire and won the race and the series. John MacCausland was second and Rick Dhine following in third.

This was a great weekend with beautiful weather. Our thanks to the Northern Lake George Yacht Club for a very nice weekend.

2nd. John MacCausland & Bruce Hatfield 5 - 2 = 7pts. North

North Wins the 67th Miller Memorial Series!

Report by John MacCausland

On the East coast we have many regattas that have a long history. The Miller Series has just that the series started in 1932 and except for the war years it has run continually to this date. Names like Etchells, Lippincott, Ogilvy, Allsopp, Beek, Ruggles are only a few of the 67 winners.

This years event was run on the weekend of July 7-8. We had a nice breeze on Saturday 10 to 14 from the south west. For the Chesapeake in the summer it was as close to heaven as it gets. The first race the right paid on the first beat Davis Buckley and John Rodgers lead at every mark only to be passed right at the line by John Vanderhoff and Rowan Perkins.

Race two same race course, same breeze one hour later the left paid big. The leader this race was Tom Price and Wil Wagner they held this lead to the last leeward mark of the windward leeward course were John MacCausland and Shane Zwingelberg just got an inside overlap and were able to hold the lead to the finish.

Tom Price held in for second holding of a late charge from John Vanderhoff. So Sunday started off with John Vanderhoff with a 1-3, John MacCausland 4-1 and Tom Price with a 6-2. The conditions for Sunday were a little different from Saturday.

Breeze more to the west and about 5 to 8 mph. The first beat the right paid John Vanderhoff and Arron Serinis were the lead boats from this side. With John MacCausland and Tom Price the 2 most left boats and rounding well behind the leaders. From here on the race only got wilder their was good puffs from the right and in-between the puffs there was not much wind. On the first run the fleet got a little bunched up. The lead boats tacked around the leeward mark which let john MacCausland get his nose out to the right. Which was the way to go the fleet then started to work the right side.the second weather mark Arron lead with Trapper Lippincott and Barbara
Vosbury second John MacCausland third this all stayed the same for the last leeward mark. Then it got really mixed up. In the last 500 yards a lot of places changed Trapper Lippincott won the race Elliott Oldak came from 6 or 7 th to finish second, John MacCausland held his place for third.

Arron and Chris Brown who lead the whole race finished fourth. Tom Price came back form the dead to finish fifth with John Vanderhoff finishing sixth. With these mixed up finishes it took a little time to figure out the overall places. A good time was had by all and thanks to the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron

Overall Results

1- John MacCausland/ Shane Zwingelberg 4-1-3 8 Pts - Powered by North Sails!
2- John Vanderhoff/Rowan Perkins 1-3-6 10 Pts
3- Elliott Oldak 5-5-2 12 Pts

Tomahawk Series - North 1,3!

Report by John MacCausland

Over the weekend of June 2-3 we went to Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey for the 43 rd running of the Tomahawk Series. With past winners like Herb Hild,Howard Lippincott and Ed Adams this event has a great history.

Friday afternoon we had planed to do an on the water clinic but the weather did not cooperate. Too much wind, rain and thunder storms which did not let us get on the water. But we used the time to talk about star sailing and went over some of the boats.

The rain finely let up mid morning Saturday. The fleet of 18 boats hit the water. The breeze was forecast to be from the south but like usual it was not to be. We sailed the first race in a light northly.John MacCausland and George Iverson lead wire to wire. Gene & Kevin Murphy sailed a great race to finish second. John Finch was third. At the finish the breeze shut down for
the rest of the day.

Sunday morning the rain was back but soon to let up and make way for clearing skies and good breeze. The racing was very exciting with lots of shifts and big puffs.John MacCausland lead the pack with gene Murphy close on his heals for another second and Rick Burgess third. The last race of the series was lead by Jim & Matthew Freeman for 95% of the way. With the most breeze of the day on the last beat John MacCausland were able to just sneak by to complete the sweep.
The Lake Hopatcong Star Fleet put on a great event. For them it was a good warm up next weekend they host the 12 th District Championship. I am sure they will do a great job.

Final Results:

John MacCausland &George Iverson 1-1-1 Total 3 pts North Sails

Gene & Kevin Murphy 2-2-6 Total 10 pts

James & Matthew Freeman 5-6-2 Total 13 pts North Sails

North Sails 1,3 at the 2001 District 2 Champs!

Report by John MacCausland

The second weekend of June took us to Havre De Grace, Md. for the 2nd. District Star Championship. The forecast for the weekend was for sunny skies but light and variable winds. For once the forecast was right. We had to put up with light winds, big shifts and a lot of current.
On day one 2 races were scheduled. After the tow to the racing area we waited for the wind to come for about 1-½ hours. The breeze started to fill from the southwest and very light. The Race Committee set us on a windward leeward course. Tom Price and Will Wanger lead wire to wire.

Some of the top teams got caught on the left side of the second beat and paid a big price when the breeze filled more from the right. We were able to hang in for second, with Barbara Vosberry and Trapper Lippincott third. Race two was sailed in better conditions, 8 to 10 knots of wind. Once again we sailed a windward leeward course. Terry Hutchinson and Andrew Scott lead wire to wire. This race was uneventful. You had to go right on the beats and you could lay the leeward mark on starboard. Not much changing of places. Again we were able to hang tough for another second with Bob and Doug Schofield third.

Day two the forecast was not much better than yesterday. We left the dock at 10 AM for the tow to the racecourse. Once we arrived at the race area, around 11 AM we waited till 3:30 PM to get the race off in a very light southwest wind with a strong ebb tide which would push us up wind and be against us on the down wind legs. We got a little help from a right hand puff at the end of the first beat to lead at the first mark. But quickly the fleet stacked up right behind us as we turned down wind in the foul current. Kevin Hall and Chris Brown who rounded the first mark in about 6th. or 7th. place played the right on the run and passed all of us to lead at the leeward mark. We rounded third and the first four boats opened up a large lead on the fleet. By the next weather mark with Kevin Hall still leading, the same thing happened as the first time. The fleet was all back in the race. But, positions stayed about the same on the run. The last leeward mark rounding separated the fleet again with the help of the current. Kevin Hall held off a hard charging Tom Price and Terry Hutchinson for the win. Tom Price and Will Wanger sailed a great series to take second. With their win in the last race Kevin Hall and Chris Brown came home in third.

North Sails had another good weekend on the East Coast with Sails on the 1st. and 3rd. place boats.

Morgan Morgan, Jr. and Charles Beek win 2001 5th District Green Star Championship in Marianne, 7294

The Fifth District Green Star Championship was sailed June 2-3, 2001. Chuck and Barton Beek have singly perpetuated this important regatta over the years. They often loan their boats to prospective Star sailors and crew for them and encourage others to do likewise in the Green Star, Their yacht club, Newport Harbor, sponsored the regatta for many years. The last several years California Yacht Club has hosted the regatta because many of the under 7000 boats in the District are located there. Chuck Beek penciled the following E-Mail missile after his boat and he as crew again won the Green Star for the seventh consecutive time:

. . . . please forgive me. There is a rule about bragging and there ought to be a rule about Marianne sailing in the Green Star! Yup, the old girl did it again last weekend, with Morgan trading in his four Green Bars for a Green Star. Gypsy boy here got to crew, and it was just wonderful sailing with Morgan who really has the hang of it and never made any mistakes, except when I told him to tack too soon for the marks. BRUN WINS 10TH ROLLINS BOWL WITH DORGAN AS CREW.

The 40th annual Rollins Bowl was held June 16-17, 2001. The regatta had twenty-six competitors from seven Star fleets and featured several new Star sailors. The Rollins Bowl began in 1962 by the late Charles "Chick" Rollins. A special guest at this year's Rollins Bowl trophy presentation was Chick's brother, Frank Rollins who reminisced about sailing with Chick in Star #0002, Methuselah. Methuselah was sailed on Manhasset Bay, Long Island NY and according to Frank it was slow- they had to pump to windward and could see daylight through the seams of the boat. But the price was right, $235 for a Star boat with two masts (inclding one gaff rig). Frank was accompanied by his wife, Ruth.

SDYC Race Committee greets Frank Rollins, brother to the late Chick Rollins who founded the Rollins Bowl in 1962. Frank is flanked by Marilyn Foster and her husband Michael Foster the Race Committee Pro for the event.

Vince Brun sailing, Giselle with Mike Dorgan won the regatta by one point over Paul Cayard. Paul was sailing with veteran crew Hal Haenel. Paul is honing his Oracle Americas Cup skills by sailing the Star.

This was Brun's 10th Rollins Bowl win since 1983, when he first sailed this venerable regatta and won with Hugo Schreiner in Ding Dong # 6481. Vince with Rick Peters won his 10th Silver Star by winning the 2001 Star Class Spring Championship in Nassau, Bahamas in April. Vince with Bill Stump (CYC) also won the 2001 SCYA Midwinters
in February.

Eric Doyle, taking a break from the Oracle Americas Cup syndicate, sailing with Santa Monica YC's Rick Peters finished 3rd.

The regatta featured the father, George, Jr. beating his son George III. George III had an OCS allowing his father the privilege of beating his 3-time Snipe National Champion son.
Senior George, sailing the oldest boat in the fleet had a daily 2nd. George III is still sailing small boats, but he is back to sailing his first love, Star boats. Welcome back George the III!
Newcomer Brad Rodi, former All-American sailor at the Naval Academy, Americas Cup and Etchells sailor, finished 5th. Abel Kaase served as his crew. They proved they are quite capable of winning in the Star Class. Another newcomer to the Star, Brian Thomas, found some tough going but had an 8th place in the first race.

The Butler brothers, who formerly sailed the Star together now have there own Stars. Jay sailing with Jeff Arnett finished 10th overall sailing Lee Kellerhouse's old Star #7209. Mark sailing 'ol 6991 with crew John Rudderham finished 13th.
Lee Kellerhouse with veteran crew Bill Bennett finished a very respectable 6th. The lone lady in the regatta, Susie Pegel and crew Tom George finished 10th.
John MacCausland sailing with Mark Strube came all the way from Copper River, New Jersey. John, a Silver Star winner, is a great sailor but had his difficulties with a borrowed boat and San Diego's fickle winds. "At" Atkinson and Ted Germann came all the way from their 10,000-foot Carter Lake, Colorado Star fleet to get beat up on.

Lee Kellerhouse (far right) SDB Fleet Captain presents Rollins Bowl
1st place trophies to Vince Brun & Mike Dorgan

Saturday night Kyle Henehan and finance Jen Oswalt hosted the Rollins Bowl dinner party at Jen's home in Pacific Beach. They served beef cooked in Guinness, mashed potatoes, green salad and Sam Adams. All enjoyed the Irish fare. The usual Star camaraderie was abundant. Beer was served at the hoist both days after the racing.

Mike Dorgan in addition to helping Vince win his 10th Rollins Bowl was all over the place helping Ed Sprague and Lee Kellerhouse tune their masts and loaning his boat, Shorebreak, to Brad Rodi because he could not skipper this regatta. He and Vince plan to take in the Star Worlds at Medemblik, Netherlands in the fall. George III and Mark Reynolds also plan to sail in the Worlds.
We missed Mark Reynolds, but he was playing Farr 40's at Marina del Rey. He loaned his boat to Master Szabo.

Special thanks go to Kyle and Jen for hosting the Saturday night party at their home, SDYC's Race Committee Pro Michael Foster and his assistant Marilyn Foster; the catering department and sailing office for making the regatta run smoothly. Mrs. Jim Reynolds graciously helped with registration, Frieda Sprague made a green salad for the party and Chuck Driscoll, while he could not sail, arranged for the fleece vest trophies.
