I am just starting to race in
our sailing club
Capri 22s. Our races are in the late fternoon/evening so winds tend
to be light and variable. What is the best technique for downwind
sailing with a race jib (110%) and new North Main. I see a lot of
wing-on-wing, but am convinced that sailing about 15 degrees off of
DDW
might be faster. What is the best sail set up and boat trim? The best way to sail wing on wind that
I have found is first of
all to use a whisker pole that is about the same length as the foot
of
the jib you are winging out. Then once the sail is filled to windward
sail about 5 degrees below a dead run. This will promote the mainsail
to
spill wind into the jib and keep it flying well. Do not sail to low
as
the jib will then be blanketed by the shadow of the mainsail. Answer by Chris Snow
