When I am heading up wind, even in medium wind, the boat heels a lot and than rounds up. What am I doing wrong? Here are some potential solutions: 1) The main is trimmed too tight. Too much pressure on the back of the boat. The main could alos be set up too full. you might want to tighten the backstay. 2) The jib is not trimmed tight enough. 3) The mast is raked back too far making the boat always want to head up. Try shortening the forestay. 4) Check the Catalina
22 tuning guide.

My boat is a Catalina 22 with wing keel. The North Sails Tuning Guide is telling me the upper shrouds should be tightened to 28 on the Loos Model A Tensions Gauge and the lower shrouds at 24. The owners manual, as well as a respected local Catalina 22 sailor tell me that the lowers should be tighter than the upper shrouds. I believe that 28 is tighter than 24, correct? I'm confused. We have
found that it is much better to keep the upper shrouds a bit tighter
than the lowers. The uppers need to be tight to help keep the mast in
column in the boat and the jibstay controlled (less sag). The lowers
need to be only so tight to keep the middle of the mast straight (no
sag to leeward and for sure no bow to windward)...any tighter and the
mast won't have the proper flexibility. Sometimes in lighter winds it
can be fast to ease off the lowers until they are actually sloppy loose.
The lowers have a fair amount of control on the fore and aft bend in
the mast...when they are a bit more relaxed the mast, and boat will
change gears more smoothly.
